One big advantage about living in Sioux Falls is that it costs less to live there than in most other comparable metropolitan areas. The city assesses no personal property tax or personal income tax and research also indicates that it is one of the cheapest places in the country to own and drive a car.

Housing is affordable - the average property price as of the end of 2006 was around $134,000. Owner occupancy levels in the city are around 60%. If you are in the market for a rental property instead, average monthly rental rates range from $450 per month to around $1100 depending on the number of bedrooms.

Several residential areas within Sioux Falls are particularly desirable. The Cathedral Historic District sits on a hill north west of downtown and features many lovely Victorian homes - this area was the first neighborhood in South Dakota to be listed on the national register of historic places.

All Saints is a particularly diverse neighborhood which features a wide range of housing styles including Gothic, Queen Anne and even Mediterranean. And McKennan historic district is characterized not only by its well kept homes, but by the distinctive landscaping along 21st Street.

For a relatively small city, Sioux Falls offers a wide variety of cultural and leisure activities, including the SD Symphony Orchestra, the Empire Community Theater and an OMNI cinema. Dining out is a pleasure - the city offers an estimated 450 restaurants and cafes to choose from.

Area residents consider education to be important - South Dakota is one of the top five states in the country with the highest percentage of students graduating from high school. Sioux Falls offers a wide range of educational opportunities - almost 23,000 students attend 15 private and 30 public schools as well as several technical schools and business colleges.

This part of South Dakota also offers some of the state's most spectacular areas of natural beauty. Several state parks are within easy reach, including Palisades, Big Sioux and Lake Vermillion. And Sioux Falls boasts 80 public parks or recreation areas within the city limits. Winter sports lovers are spoilt for choice with plentiful skiing, ice skating and snowboarding.
