Brookings hosts a wide variety of community events throughout the year, including a lively farmer's market from May through October, free weekly musical events from June through August, and summer festivals and special events. Brookings is home to several outdoor recreation areas, and includes some great hunting and fishing spots as well as plenty of other sporting and recreation facilities at public parks all over the city.

Education

The Brookings School District comprises three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. There are three colleges within one hundred miles of Brookings, including the University of South Dakota and Southwest State University. South Dakota State University is located in Brookings itself and has around 7,500 students.

Real Estate

In part due to its population of students and singles, Brookings has a high proportion of people living alone. The city's low owner-occupancy rate means there is plenty of opportunity here both for home-buyers and those looking to invest in rental property. Despite the high proportion of singles in the city there are still plenty of family residences available, with most family homes having two to three bedrooms. Many of Brookings' residences are of relatively recent construction, with most built after 1975.
